Webinar: From Geothermal Conceptual Model to Reservoir Scenarios (Leapfrog → Volsung)

On 17 March 2026, from 14:00 to 14:45 CET, the European Federation of Geologists (EFG) and Seequent, as part of their strategic collaboration, are organising a webinar titled ‘From Geothermal Conceptual Model to Reservoir Scenarios (Leapfrog → Volsung)‘.

A defensible subsurface model is essential for any geothermal project. Moving beyond simple heat maps, this webinar introduces an integrated workflow that connects 3D conceptual modelling in Leapfrog with reservoir scenario evaluation in Volsung.

We will explore how a conceptual model can be transferred into Volsung to test a base case and a range of sensitivities, helping teams understand key drivers such as permeability architecture, boundaries, and reinjection strategy. The session focuses on producing decision‑ready outputs that clearly communicate assumptions and uncertainty.

WHAT WE WILL COVER:

  • Why geothermal assessments require a robust, defensible subsurface model
  • How Leapfrog supports clear 3D conceptualisation of geothermal systems
  • How Volsung evaluates reservoir scenarios and operational strategies
  • How to compare base cases and sensitivities to understand uncertainty
  • How to present results that support confident technical decisions

AGENDA:

14:00 – Live presentation by Dr. Esteban Gómez‑Díaz: Showing how Seequent tools are applied in geothermal projects

14:25 – Interactive Q&A Session

SPEAKER:

Dr. Esteban Gómez‑Díaz

Geothermal specialist at Seequent with international experience in reservoir characterisation, numerical simulation, subsurface modelling, and geothermal exploration across diverse geological settings.

He began his career assessing geothermal potential in Colombia before completing a master’s degree in Geothermal Energy in Iceland. He later earned a dual PhD at RWTH Aachen University and ETH Zürich through the EASYGO programme, focusing on geothermal reservoir characterisation.

His professional and research work spans Colombia, Mexico, the USA, Iceland, Germany, and Switzerland, combining applied research with industry collaboration. He is currently a Customer Solutions Specialist in Seequent’s Energy team, working with Volsung reservoir simulation software.

About EFG:

The European Federation of Geologists (EFG) is a non-profit organisation that represents the professional interests of the geological community in Europe. EFG actively promotes the importance of geoscience for society and advocates for sustainable practices to address global challenges, particularly in the field of climate change. EFG confers the internationally-recognised European Geologist (“EurGeol”) professional title to suitably qualified candidates.
