EFG Masterclass ’’Where and why H2 accumulation could be prospected?’’ (on line, 09/10/2024)
Join Dr. Isabelle Moretti for a masterclass on "Where and why H2 accumulation could be prospected?" This course offers an in-depth overview of natural hydrogen (H2) exploration, covering the current understanding of H2 generation in the subsurface, global landscape, and ongoing activities. Gain insights into H2 as a clean energy source and the key factors influencing its accumulation and exploration. Ideal for geologists, energy professionals, and researchers.

Course outline:

The aim of this short course is to provide an overview of natural H2 exploration activity and knowledge. The course will cover the current understanding on the H2 generation in subsurface, global landscape and ongoing activities related to natural H2.

About the Presenter:

Isabelle Moretti, a scientist with a master’s in mathematics and a Ph.D. in earth science from Univ Paris XI (Orsay), began her career in 1987 at the French Petroleum Institute (now IFPen). She has held various project management roles globally and has developed professional software in structural geology. Isabelle has authored over 160 scientific papers and supervised around 30 PhDs. She has also worked with industry giants like TOTAL and governmental entities such as IRD and CNRS. In 2012, she joined ENGIE, becoming the Technical Officer and later the Scientific Director, leading research programs in renewable energies and new technologies. Currently, she leads a team focused on natural hydrogen at Pau University (UPPA) and serves on the board of EartH2, promoting natural hydrogen E&P in Europe. Isabelle is also a board member of INERIS and the pole Avenia board.

Learning outcomes:

  • The H2_generating rocks, generalities about the reactions that allow H2 generation in subsurface.
  • Similitudes and differences within the petroleum systems
  • The prospective geological contexts
  • Panorama of the countries where the exploration starts
  • The ecosystem and its growth

Designed for

This course is an opportunity for those who are not yet familiar with the topic to gain a global understanding of what is happening. No need to be an expert in geology, geochemistry or geophysics. This course is an introduction to this new E&P world, if you area already working on it, you may not learn much. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a global overview, in particular so that you can then take advantage of the abundant literature on the subject and dedicated conferences, such as H-NAT 2024 in Paris in November, this course is for you.
